How Meta Data Can Help Improve Your Site's First Impressions

When making your website you need to consider many things such as the design and layout of the site, what images will give your site impact and what copy you will put on the page to help promote your business. You want your site to look great and give a great first impression when people see it but people sometimes don't even have to see your site to get a first impression.
Before a potential even visits your site they can see your site in a search engine. The content of your site may be enough to get it ranking in search engines but without creating the meta data for your site you have little control of what information will be displayed. Search engines will primarily display the meta description under the link to your site, but if you have not entered any meta data then small parts, or snippets, of text are selected from your page where they match. This can lead to a confusing message to potential visitors who may choose to click on another site with a clearer description.
The next job is to ensure that the description you enter on the page is unique to that page on your site as well as being informative. Search engines don't like it when you use the same description on more than one page as it makes it difficult to decide which page is more relevant and therefore which page needs to be displayed in search results.
Make sure you include any words that you think people may search for to find your site as when these match they are displayed in bold in the search result. The bold text helps encourage potential visitors that the result is an appropriate match to their search term. You can get carried away and try and fit the same word in too many times so there are a lot of matches, but be careful as this could send a bad quality signal to search engines as it thinks you may be trying to spam them.
As well as having the correct terms in your description, you can try capitalising the first letter of the important words. This way, even if they don't match the search term they will still stand out. Don't use all capitals as it may put potential visitors off by seeming too aggressive.
Above all, meta data descriptions should make sense to read and clarify why visitors should visit your site. The description can act as an advert so making it stand out from other results for that term can increase the amount of clicks your site will gain.
